When you think of corporate events in Portugal, you probably think of Lisbon, Porto, or the Alentejo. Perhaps the Algarve for summer incentive trips. Sertã rarely makes that list. That is exactly why we visited — to understand what makes events in Sertã different from everything we have organised in other destinations.
And what we found justifies every kilometre: dense natural landscapes, venues with genuine character, an authenticity that cannot be manufactured — and an almost complete absence of other corporate events competing for the same space.
If your next event needs to step away from the obvious, keep reading.
What makes events in Sertã a strategic choice

Sertã is located in the district of Castelo Branco, in the heart of Beira Baixa. Just over two hours from Lisbon and Porto, it is accessible without being obvious — a rare balance in Portugal. What sets it apart as an event destination:
Immediate nature. The Zêzere river, the Fragas de São Simão, and an untouched natural environment. The landscape works as a setting at no additional production cost. For events that want to create a sense of distance and focus, this environment is unbeatable.
Authentic architecture. Stone, lime and timber. The Filipina Bridge over the Zêzere, the manor houses and restored rural buildings have character without needing heavy decoration. The space already tells a story — your production team has half the work done.

Scale and proximity. In Sertã, everything is close. The concentration of quality accommodation, event venues and outdoor activities within a small radius is the key logistical argument for this destination.
When we work on an event here, that mapping is our starting point — and it is work that is no longer yours to do.
Santo António — the patron who inhabits Sertã’s spaces
There is a dimension of Sertã that most event guides completely ignore: its historical relationship with Saint Anthony. Saint Anthony is one of the town’s patron saints. This devotion is not merely a religious tradition — it literally shaped the physical space of the town over centuries, and that heritage is alive today in places every event planner should know.
The Convent of Santo António and the hotel it houses. The Convent of Santo António — founded in the 17th century by the Franciscans — is Sertã’s most emblematic building. It has been rehabilitated and transformed into Convento da Sertã Hotel, managed by the Santos & Marçal group. This is not simply “staying in a hotel”: it is working, meeting and resting inside a Franciscan convent with more than 400 years of history — with cloister, unique rooms and an interior garden.

What we found during our scouting visit
On our visit we mapped the spaces available in Sertã and what each offers in terms of capacity, atmosphere and logistics. We share the essentials here — with no marketing filters.
The offer in Sertã covers, in practice, all the needs of a well-organised corporate event. There are accommodation venues with character — Convento da Sertã Hotel, inside the Convent of Santo António, is the most emblematic example: cloister, unique rooms, interior garden. There are rural estates with capacity for larger-scale events with leisure components. There are restaurants with rooms for corporate events and quality regional gastronomy — Maranhos da Sertã, roast kid, Tigelada Beirã.
What surprised us most was not any single space. It was realising that it is possible to build a complete programme — accommodation, meetings, catering, outdoor activities — without having to coordinate suppliers across different destinations. The concentration of quality offer within a small radius is Sertã’s great logistical argument.
What types of events work in Sertã
Not all formats adapt equally well. Sertã is ideal for:
Leadership and strategy retreats. Physical distance creates mental distance. Management teams that need to think without interruptions find the right environment here. The historic accommodation spaces in the town create an experience completely different from any conference hotel — the cloister of a Franciscan convent before the first working session changes the mindset of any team.
Outdoor team building. Orienteering activities, kayaking on the Zêzere, hiking trails at Fragas de São Simão. Nature is experience infrastructure, not just a backdrop.
Company celebrations (year-end, anniversaries). When the goal is to create shared memory, an unexpected destination amplifies that effect. “We went to Sertã” is a story — “we went to yet another Lisbon hotel” is not.
High-impact micro-events (10–40 people). Small groups benefit most from the intimacy and exclusivity that Sertã’s spaces naturally provide.
What the ideal day of a retreat in Sertã looks like
A well-designed retreat is not a list of activities — it is a progression. From arrival to closing, every moment has intention. Here is a possible structure for a full day in Sertã with a team of 10 to 30 people.
Morning — focus and alignment
The team arrives in Sertã around 9:30am — two hours by car from Lisbon, without city traffic. The first hour is for settling in and a regional breakfast: broa bread, local honey, Beira Baixa cheese. Nothing that feels like a meeting yet.
From 10:30am to midday, a working session in a space with character — the cloister of Convento da Sertã Hotel, a room overlooking the Zêzere, the interior garden. The environment is part of the method: outside the office, thinking changes. The agenda is set in advance by CGT so that no time is wasted.
Lunch — the table as strategy
Lunch at a local restaurant with a menu tailored to the group. Maranhos da Sertã, roast kid, regional cured meats. The meal is long and intentional — this is where informal conversations happen, where bonds form, where the retreat gains meaning beyond the slides.
Afternoon — movement and territory
The afternoon belongs to the landscape. Depending on the team’s profile, two complementary options:
- Outdoor activity: guided walk through Fragas de São Simão, kayaking on the Zêzere or a visit to Castelo de Bode dam. Physical movement, real landscape, conversation without an agenda.
- Cultural experience: guided visit to Sertã’s historic centre, the Convent, and nearby schist villages. For teams that prefer a more contemplative pace.
CGT coordinates the local supplier and integrates the activity into the programme — so no one needs to manage anything on the day.
End of day — celebration and closing
Dinner in a private space, with the team gathered around a shared table. An intentional closing moment — a toast, an acknowledgement, a word. The best retreats end with something people want to talk about when they return.
Return to Lisbon or overnight in Sertã — depending on the budget and format chosen.

When planning an event in destinations outside urban centres, certain criteria become especially relevant:
Access and parking. Most guests will arrive by car. Confirm access and car park capacity — in rural areas this detail can be critical.
Connectivity. For events with a working component, Wi-Fi quality and mobile network coverage must be tested in advance. Do not assume — test on-site at the actual event time.
Nearby accommodation. For one or two-day events, proximity between the event space and accommodation is essential. In Sertã, the concentration of spaces makes it possible to coordinate event and accommodation in the same venue or within five minutes.
Trusted local suppliers. Catering, sound and lighting, florist. In destinations outside urban centres, it is essential to map local suppliers in advance — or ensure your usual suppliers will travel.
Usable outdoor space. Much of Sertã’s value is outside. Confirm whether there are covered areas for rain or strong sun protection — especially for events from June to September.
What we learned on our scouting visit
We visited Sertã as part of our destination mapping process for the events we produce. What stayed with us:
The human scale of the town creates an intimacy that is hard to replicate in other destinations. People slow down. They talk. The pace drops — and that is reflected in the quality of conversations that happen between sessions.
The Santos & Marçal group manages several key spaces in the town — Convento da Sertã Hotel, Quinta de Santa Teresinha, Quinta d’Oliveiras and Restaurante Ponte Velha — which makes coordination significantly simpler. Speaking to one operational contact covers most of the logistical needs.
The gastronomy is genuinely part of the experience. Not an add-on. The Maranhos da Sertã, the Tigelada Beirã and the local wines are conversation starters that need no facilitation.
Conclusion
Sertã is not a destination for all events. It is a destination for events that want to mean something — where the environment works in favour of focus, connection and authentic experience.
If your next event is looking for that, it is worth a scouting visit. Or a conversation with us.
